The reason behind the fuel price reduction

The Prime Minister, Abdullah Badawi has just announce today that effective 12am, the retail price for Petrol and diesel by between eight sen and 22 sen a litre. The price of RON97 petrol will be reduced by 15 sen to RM2.55 a litre from RM2.70, while RON92 would be 22 sen less at RM2.40, from RM2.62. Retail diesel on the other hand would drop by eight sen to RM2.50 a litre.

I remember very clearly that the PM says that the government would only review and make necessary announcement by 31 August 2008. The only reason that I could think of that causes this sudden change would be the upcoming Permatang Pauh by-election which would see Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah contesting against PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Government move to announce the reduction of retail fuel price is now being seen as Barisan Strategy to win the rakyat's heart.

On the other hand why on earth would he want to go on the public transport yesterday? why cant he do that 4 years ago when he took over as PM. I personally think that the highly publicises news about the PM getting on the public transport is also a politically motivated in its bid to win the Permatang Pauh's by-election.

Pak Lah, we the rakyat cannot tolerate with your indecisiveness any longer, please be more decisive and do what you have been entrusted to do or else please make way for people who are more capable. You only have 2 years left and time is definatelly running against you.

Read the following article in the NST online:
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: No overnight cure to fix the ills
By MOAZ YUSUF AHMAD, Subang Jaya

2008/08/19

IT was very interesting to read about the new Scomi Rail Technology Centre being built in Rawang. The completion of this facility will expand Scomi's manufacturing abilities and allow them to build monorail carriages and electric-multiple unit carriages at their assembly lines. Scomi is already working to refurbish RapidKL buses and will tender for the refurbishment of KTMB Komuter EMU carriages.

Perhaps in the future, Scomi will become the "go to" company for public transportation in Malaysia. This is probably a good exercise in strategic planning, since public transport will become more important to Malaysia in the future.

I find it unfortunate that Scomi and the government have not bothered to invest in public transportation within the country.

I also note that Scomi introduced the Sutra 2nd Generation monorail in November last year, and then proceeded to compete for monorail projects in Vietnam and India.

To date, no announcements have been made to buy more carriages for the KL Monorail, even though this would be an obvious way to improve services and help Scomi demonstrate the Sutra monorail to the world.

This is why I think the government has "lost the plot" when it comes to public transportation. Witness the comments by the transport minister, who stated "public transportation has overnight become a solution to many road users following the rise in the price of petrol".

Public transport is not an overnight solution, and we can see that the government has not understood this. It seems that the government has been sleeping on the public transportation file for the past 10 years.

Hence, the failure to push for better public transport in the past years beyond the Intrakota and RapidKL bus services, which did not provide the improvements that were promised.

We know that the government had ignored, "reviewed" or shelved many important projects to improve public transportation services. Because of this lack of attention and effort, KTMB is having difficulties maintaining a "state-of good repair" in the inter-city, freight and Komuter trains.

Furthermore, while the government may have woken up to public transportation as a solution, they have woken up too late. The rail network in the Klang Valley is inadequate and incomplete, without enough carriages to support passenger demand. The bus services are still poorly managed and falling apart, and many bus operators are being forced out of business.

Also, look at the proposed new rail lines, which are being designed without public consultation. Like the existing services, the new rapid transit lines will probably have "light" passenger capacity with "heavy" engineering and construction costs.

It is also interesting to note that since Datuk Ong Tee Keat became transport minister, I have yet to see him attend any photo opportunities or events at railway stations. He has visited RapidKL, Scomi and KTM facilities, but has he ever gone to KL Sentral or Masjid Jamek stations to witness the situation for himself?

Of course, the Transport Ministry is only one agency responsible for public transportation in Malaysia -- and that, of course, is the real source of problems in public transportation -- and fixing these problems will require more than an overnight solution.

Particularly relevant in view of the cancellation of the Penang MRT project-where to drum up more business eh?

Yeah Charli i thought as much, nowadays it seems it's just not only bloggers pimping their blogs for more hits. Politicians do it for votes too! But was just really wondering if lately our politics have taken a turn for the worst, looks like its running around like a chicken without a head. Hopefully the economy and the rakyat is not made to suffer more.
