Malaysia's First BlackBerry Community Gathering by RIM

As many of you might have already know, I founded the BlackBerry Malaysia Community(BBMYC) fan page on Facebook back in May 2009. Since then the fan page has grown from zero to almost 16,000 fan based today. All these was achieve without spending a single cent on marketing.

The tremendous growth of the fan page caught the attention of Research in Motion (RIM), and they decides to talk to me on the future of the fan page. The result of the discussion? Well RIM will manage BlackBerry Malaysia fan page while the fan page which I managed will be rename to BlackBerry Malaysia Community to avoid confusion among BlackBerry fan. In return RIM will continue to provide me with support and exclusive invites for all my fan to all BlackBerry's event held in Malaysia.

The first event which was organised after the successful negotiation was the Malaysia's First BlackBerry Community Gathering held last Friday. The party took place at Top Hat Restaurant which is about 2 minutes drive from KLCC.

Oh well, I will let these hot and juicy photo tell the story,

The event saw close to 150 BlackBerry fan from various walk of life attending.

Lindy Khong from RIM's PR agency, myself and Oki Lai from DiGi Telecommunications

The ever hot and enticing Daphne Iking, the host for the night

As most people would have already know, Malaysia is a heaven for food and a party wouldn't be consider successful without some nice and juicy food to satisfy everyone's taste bud.

YES!!!, It's finally launched.

Today YTL Communications Sdn Bhd the telecommunication arm of YTL Group has finally launched the much anticipate WIMAX service after some 2 years delay. It's marketing team did a fantastic job by cropping up the name YES, for its new service. YTL was also quick in marketing and positioning itself as the first nationwide 4G service provider, separating itself from existing big boys such as Celcom Axiata, DiGi (Telenor) and Maxis. Whether it is truly a 4G mobile operator, I shall leave that for another post.

A rather grand private launching event took place at the JW Marriot @ Kuala Lumpur which is also owned by the YTL Group of Companies. I was among one of the lucky people who got invited along a side with VVIP's such as MCA President, Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek, Malaysia Pop Queen Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, former judge of Malaysian Idol Paul Moss, and other local & foreign personalities. But make no mistake, I'm NO VVIPs or Celebrity, just a regular telco guy who blog for leisure.

The begin of the long awaited presentation

Opening speech by Tan Sri Dato' Francis Yeoh Sock Ping (YTL Group's Managing Director)

Wing K. Lee (YTL Communications or YES's CEO)

A short & simple introduction to Mr Wing, born and raised in Hong Kong by his mother single, Wing graduated from University of Texas, Austin in 1989. Wing worked with Sprint and Cleawire in the United State before being given 2 offers, one is to join China Mobile to serve 500 million customers or YTL to change the way people live. After having a serious thought, he choose 27 million over 500 million.

Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr. Yeoh Tiong Lay, Tan Sri Dato' Francis Yeoh Sock Ping, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (Deputy Prime Minister) and Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim (Information, Communications and Culture Minister)

After the private launch took place, all invited VVIPs & guest were usher to Lot 10 @ Bukit Bintang, an upscale shopping haven (also owned by YTL Group) to join in the public launching. The public launch was just as interesting as the private launch with Taiwanese Pop Star & Youtube sensation Jimmy Lin Yu Chun (aka Xiao Pang), mesmerising the crowd by singing popular ballads such as Amazing Grace & I will always love you by Mariah Carey.

Jimmy Lin Yu Chun also knows as the next Susan Boyle & Mariah Carey of the east.

After all the formality, the public were free to roam on the ground floor of Lot 10 which was turn into a huge display centre for YES products & service offering.

Datuk Sri Michael Yeoh Sock Siong, Tan Sri Dato' Francis Yeoh Sock Ping,Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim, Jimmy Lin Yu Chun, Tan Sri Dato' Seri (Dr) Yeoh Tiong Lay, Puan Sri Datin Seri Tan Kai Yong, Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong.

I'd the opportunity to meet Tan Sri Francis Yeoh and his brother Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong, Director of YTL Communications who repeatedly asked me and my colleague to join them after someone whisper to them that we were the cream of the crop in DiGi Corporate Sales team. All we have to do was say YES, now that's catchy. That's an interesting offer which I would consider but not at this point.

Tan Sri with my colleague: Oki Lai, Me, Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, & Billy Wong

After almost 9 months since we first meet at Nikko Hotel, I meet Wing again and to my surprise he still remembers me.

Me, Wing K Lee, Oki Lai & Billy Wong

After browsing through the product offering, I did some catching up some of my friends in YTL Communications such as Jesse Ch'ng, Yuni and the Chief Marketing Officer, Yap Kok Leong. Before we head home, we had the Original Imbi Road Pork Noodle at Hutong @ Lot 10.

A catchy gigantic display cube at the entrance of Lot 10 @ Bukit Bintang. A good crowd on the busy inter section of Jalan Bukit Bintang & Jalan Sultan Ismail.

Shall write about the YES service in about 6 months when the service is much more mature and have garner some traction in term of subscriber based to give a more accurate review. After all, I'm a telco guy.

MRCA 18th Anniversary: Night of Heroes

Few hours ago, I was at the MRCA (Malaysian Retails Chain Association) 18th Anniversary & Award Night at Sunway Hotels & Resort. The theme for the night was Night of Heroes, aim at giving recognition to successful entrepreneur who are successful in their respective retain venture.

As usual, attended the night of glitz and glamour on behalf of DiGi.

Benjamin Chan & myself.
There were more than 1,000 guest presents at the event which includes prominent retain chain owner such as Dato' Nelson Kwok (Founder of Nelson Corn), Ms Valarie Choo (Managing Director of Grand Surf Sdn Bhd, Redbox Karaoke), Dato' Tay Sim Kim (founder of OSIM (M) Sdn Bhd), Mr Lee Hwa Cheng (CEO of Sinma Jewellery), Mr Chuah See Yong (Managing Director of Golden Scoop Sdn Bhd, Baskin Robin Malaysia) and many more.
It's truly inspiring to see all these entrepreneurs being so successful in their respective businesses. Perhaps I shall start a special blog post and interview these successful owners considering that I've access to most of them in my current job scope.

Break Free with DiGi @ Ecoba, Damansara Perdana

It's been quite sometime since I last attended a blogger event organised by Nuffnang, partly because of my hectic work schedule as well as the laziness in me. Just 3 days earlier I got to know that my company will be having an event with Nuffnang. So I tried my luck by contacting the marketing guys who were really friendly(well everyone in DiGi is extremely friendly, this include myself of cause) in handling 2 invites to me and my guest. Thanks Mark Darren & Richie Khaw.

Introducing Ecoba, Restaurant & Bistro

Anyway the event is called Break Free With DiGi, an event organised for blogger to introduce DiGi's newly launch Smart Plan which is suppose to free the Internet feature from being stuck in your mobile phone. Held at Ecoba @ Damansara Perdana, one of the most happening chill out place in PJ, the venue seems to be the perfect place for parties as its strategically located within the golden triangle of Petaling Jaya, comes with ample parking space, affordable food and beverages and cosy interior.

The Entrance

Did I just mentioned that the food and beverages were affordable?? Dont get me wrong, all everything for the night is free, what I meant was the menu looks affordable for KL Standard. Nevertheless since DiGi's throwing the party for blogger, there were free flow of F&B served including beers.

Registration Counter

Just like any other event, goody bags were given to every bloggers(nothing much to shout about the freebies though as I've tons of it in my office locker and in my car).

Wrist Bands are given to those above 18 and non-malays.

In order to control the crowd, wrist bands were given to those above 18 and non-malays only so that the waiter know who they should serve those booze.

Goody bags!!!!

There were lots of games throughout the night where attractive prizes were given away. Several units of BlackBerry and Smart Phones were given to the winners courtesy of DiGi. Unfortunately I'm an employees thus I cant try my luck in winning those cool gadgets.

Ecoba's Interior

From my observation, most of those who attended the event were fresh faces and there were lot more Malay Bloggers this time around which is a good thing i guess as it blend well with DiGi's aspiration in gaining market share in the malay segment.

Sad to say, there were any top blogger at the event, probably because there were no arrangement to invite them, besides, RelayKL @ Bukit Jalil, Hennesy Artistry @ Zouk KL, Khalil Fong Timeless Concert @ Genting and several other parties were all happening at the same time.

On the bright side, I've one of the top food blogger with me as my guest for the night, she is non other than Sue Lynn aka BangsarBabe.

Sue Lynn & myself

As usual, Timothy Tiah was at the event as Nuffnang was hired to help co-organise the event. Ever since I knew him more than 2 years back when he started Nuffnang, Tim is known to be a very hands on entrepreneur who doesn't mind getting his hands dirty together with his staffs aka nuffies.

Timothy Tiah

There was a mock giant BlackBerry Bold 9700 on display at the entrance of Ecoba, one where people can step inside to take photos just like what I did:

Myself

I fail as an actor as my facial expression look kinda fake in this photo, was suppose to act miserable behind those iron bars.

Sue Lynn

Her acting skills is worse than mine, guess she is the only person that would smile while being behind those iron bars, or maybe she still dreaming of the Miss Malaysia Pageant.

The best actor of all time have got to be my friend Mr Chan, the owner of SwitchBox, an event company that has been working with DiGi on various events for the past 7 years. Switchbox is co-organising this event with Nuffnang.

Chan with his Oscar Award winning expression.

It was certainly a good initiative by DiGi in trying to blend in the local bloggers scene, will be looking forward for more of such event from DiGi.
